5 Reasons Why Solid Surface is Better than Marble

Marble has become the top option for countertops because of its natural beauty.  It is an elegant material to use in your space, but it comes with several drawbacks.

Easily Scratched — Marble is softer and more porous than other countertop options, so it scratches and stains in a way that others do not.

Easily Stained — Marble is a naturally porous material.  This makes it susceptible to staining. To avoid this, marble countertops must be professionally sealed upon installation and must be resealed every six months.

Easily Etched — Acidic foods such as lemons and other citrine fruits can cause etching on marble countertops.  This is when the polish or sealant is removed from the surface resulting in a dull appearance.

What are some good alternatives to marble countertops that won’t break the bank?

Solid surface is a wonderful, affordable alternative to marble with fewer drawbacks. Keep reading to learn more about the difference between the two materials and learn why you should consider using solid surface for your project.

What is Solid Surface?

Solid surface is a man-made material created from natural materials, resins and high-performance acrylic. Solid surface first rose to popularity in the mid-1960s as a cheaper alternative to natural stone and as a higher quality material than laminate.

What makes solid surface a good option for my space?

Durable — Solid surface is engineered to be durable enough to withstand the everyday wear-and-tear a countertop faces. If your solid surface ever gets damaged, it can be repaired by an experienced fabricator

Solid — True to its name, solid surface is a solid, nonporous surface that is stain-resistant.

Sanitary — As solid surface is nonporous, it will not harbor bacteria.  For spills, just wipe clean with warm water and mild soap.

Affordable — Solid surface was created to be an affordable alternative to natural stone, and it still is today.

Flexible — Because solid surface is an acrylic-based material, it can be thermoformed (molded) into almost any shape you can imagine. Craft a sink, shower, desk, or decorative table from solid surface without any noticeable seams or joins.

Marble Look Solid Surface Design Ideas

Double Trouble

With solid surface, you can create the illusion of different thicknesses. Use a small mitered edge to form a “thicker” countertop. (Mitered edges give the countertops the appearance of being thicker than the standard .5” slabs by joining two pieces of solid surface at a 45-degree angle or building up layers of solid surface strips on the edge of the countertop.) Use .5” solid surface to create a thinner shelf for holding small items such as spices, oils, or decor. This unique feature balances the overall design of the kitchen while adding a useful shelf to keep your countertop clutter-free.

Creative Flair

This design combines the elegant look of marble with a fun fabrication, and both are made from solid surface! This bread shop has a luxurious aesthetic from the marble-fronted counter, but it doesn’t take itself too seriously. The fabricated drip over the side of the counter adds a fun flair to a sophisticated design.

Blank Slate

This light marble pattern works as a beautiful stage for any home. Whether you want to use it as a countertop or tabletop, your home is sure to look luxurious and beautiful because of it. The light color and slight marbling in the design are barely noticeable giving you a blank slate for any creative endeavor you may have.

Beautiful Backsplash

You can also find off-white marbled patterns to use in your home or business. In this kitchen, the solid surface is used for both the countertops and backsplash adding a touch of luxury to the modern, clean space.

Clean and Simple

Sometimes, less is more. Here, the homeowner chose a very simple marbled pattern to keep the attention on the fun cabinets. Whether you are looking for a more substantial marbling or mere wisps of marble, you are sure to find a solid surface pattern you love.
