How to Navigate Chinese Quartz Tariffs

SUMMARY OF CHINESE QUARTZ TARIFFS:

• The Trump administration imposed a 10 percent tariff on about $200 billion worth of Chinese products. That includes quartz. The 10 percent tariff will escalate to 25 percent at year-end. 
• The U.S. Department of Commerce (Commerce) announced on Monday, September 17, affirmative preliminary determination of the countervailing duty (CVD) investigation of quartz surfaces from China as one outcome of Cambria’s April petition. Commerce assigned a subsidy rate of 178.45 percent rate for two Chinese quartz manufacturers -- Fasa Industrial Corp. Ltd. and 178.45 percent for Foshan Hero Stone Co., Ltd. Additionally, the preliminary rate for all other Chinese producers and exporters is 34.38 percent. 
• Commerce is still investigating antidumping claims by Cambria of quartz surfaces being sold below market rates, which will likely result in an additional tariff in November, on top of those already applied.

With the tariffs, much of the Chinese quartz supply is being disrupted as the Chinese companies are forced to raise prices to cover the cost of the tariffs. And that has the potential to negatively impact the businesses of fabricators and others who have been dependent on Chinese quartz as a significant part of their business.
